  • David Lane Studio Pottery Jug | Blue Grey Glazed Stoneware (14cm)

  • £35.00

:  at  £35.00  each

A beautifully made vintage studio pottery jug by British potter David Lane, associated with Carn Pottery and Abington Pottery. Hand thrown with a wonderfully tactile form, the jug has visible throwing rings beneath a glossy blue-grey glaze, scattered with tiny flecks of deeper blue. A dark contrasting glaze traces the rim and runs dramatically down beside the pouring lip, giving the piece a particularly individual character. The softly rounded body, substantial handle and gently pulled spout make this a very appealing example of post-war British studio pottery – decorative enough to display on its own but still retaining the honest, functional quality of a handmade vessel. The base carries David Lane's distinctive monogram. ABOUT DAVID LANE David Lane was a British studio potter whose career included Carn Pottery and later Abington Pottery in Cambridgeshire. His work forms part of the strong British studio pottery tradition of the second half of the 20th century, combining practical thrown forms with distinctive individual glazing. Pieces can be identified by Lane's characteristic potter's monogram, as found on the base of this jug. WHY I LOVE IT The glaze is the star here. From a distance it appears a quiet blue-grey, but close up there are tiny flashes of blue and all the movement of the throwing beneath it. The almost black line falling from the rim beside the spout gives an otherwise understated piece a brilliant little bit of drama. A lovely addition to a collection of British studio pottery, mid-century ceramics or handmade vintage stoneware. Carefully packed for posting from Cornwall.
