A striking vintage studio pottery vase from Old Nick Pottery, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. This beautifully wheel-thrown stoneware vase has a wonderfully earthy mid-century feel, with a soft grey-green speckled glaze contrasting against a deep charcoal decorative band. Around the body is a repeating hand-incised or sgraffito design of sweeping, wave-like forms, allowing the lighter clay beneath to show through. The flared rim, rounded form and flashes of warm terracotta give the piece a particularly lovely balance of texture and colour. As a handmade studio piece, the small variations and marks from its making are part of its character. The base is hand-incised “OLDNICK” with the additional initials “W.S.” beneath. I have not been able to establish the identity represented by these initials, so no individual maker attribution is being made. ABOUT OLD NICK POTTERY Old Nick Pottery was established at Old Nick Village in Plettenberg Bay on South Africa’s Garden Route. Janet and Stuart Holding took over the site in 1978, developing workshops where handmade pottery was produced alongside other crafts. The pottery became part of a long-running creative community at Old Nick, with a number of craftspeople involved in its production over the years. Today, vintage Old Nick pieces make attractive examples of South African studio ceramics, particularly for collectors drawn to hand-thrown stoneware, organic decoration and late 20th-century pottery. MEASUREMENTS Height: approximately 13 cm Circumference: approximately 35 cm Widest diameter: approximately 11 cm CONDITION Vintage condition – please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description. Any small variations in glaze, texture and decoration are consistent with the handmade nature of studio pottery. A lovely standalone decorative piece with enough character to work equally well in a modern, rustic, Scandinavian or mid-century interior. Please note: vintage and handmade pieces may show minor irregularities and signs of age which form part of their history and character.
