A beautiful antique Weller Pottery vase from the sought-after Baldin line, dating to approximately 1915–1920. Made by Weller Pottery of Zanesville, Ohio, this wonderfully characterful vase features the naturalistic apple decoration associated with the Baldin range. Apples, leaves and branches wrap around the softly modelled body, picked out in wonderfully earthy shades of olive green, russet, brown, cream and muted pink-red. There is something particularly appealing about the surface of this piece. Rather than being bright or glossy, the colours have a soft, aged quality that works beautifully with the organic decoration and sculptural form. WELLER POTTERY & THE BALDIN LINE Weller was one of the major names in American art pottery, established by Samuel A. Weller in Ohio in the late 19th century. By the early 20th century the company had become an important producer of decorative art pottery, creating numerous distinctive lines inspired by the natural world and the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. The Baldin line was produced during the early decades of the 20th century and is generally dated to around 1915–1920. Fruit, leaves and branches were used as integral parts of the decoration, giving the pottery the rich, organic character seen on this vase. More than a century later, surviving Weller pieces are collected as examples of the golden age of American art pottery. MEASUREMENTS Approximately: 15 cm high 10 cm wide at the widest point CONDITION Very good antique condition considering its age of over 100 years. There are no cracks or restoration. There is a small chip to the underside of the base. This is not visible when the vase is standing or displayed, but it has been mentioned for complete accuracy and can be seen in the photographs. As with antique art pottery, minor variations and signs of manufacture are part of the character of the piece. A lovely example of early 20th-century American pottery and a striking decorative piece in its own right. It would sit beautifully in an Arts & Crafts, country house, period or eclectic interior. Please study all photographs as they form part of the description. Carefully packed for posting from Cornwall, England.
