A fascinating first-edition copy of The Doyle Diary: The Last Great Conan Doyle Mystery, published by Paddington Press in 1978. The book reproduces the extraordinary illustrated diary and sketchbook of Charles Altamont Doyle, Victorian artist and father of Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Created during Doyle’s confinement at Montrose Royal Asylum in 1889, its pages combine delicate watercolours, humorous observations, strange creatures and dreamlike imagery. Michael Baker’s accompanying investigation explores Charles Doyle’s troubled life and the mystery surrounding this remarkable diary. • First edition, 1978 • Paddington Press Ltd • ISBN: 0-7092-0047-1 • Hardback with original illustrated dust jacket • Colour and monochrome illustrations throughout • An unusual gift for collectors of Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes, Victorian art or literary history CONDITION Good vintage condition. The book remains sound and the illustrated pages present well, with some age-related toning. The original dust jacket has visible rubbing, edge wear and corner wear, as shown clearly in the photographs. Please study all images as they form part of the description.
