A particularly lovely small vintage Carn Pottery vase, made at Nancledra near Penzance in Cornwall. This unusual little piece has a wonderfully sculptural form, with a rounded body rising into a narrow cylindrical neck. Around the shoulder is a series of pierced circular openings, while the lower body is decorated with an organic, almost pebble or cellular pattern picked out in soft blue-grey against a pale ground. Despite its modest size, it is a very distinctive piece of Cornish studio pottery and looks wonderful displayed alone or as part of a collection. ABOUT CARN POTTERY Carn Pottery was established in the 1960s at Nancledra, a small village between St Ives and Penzance in West Cornwall. The pottery became particularly associated with the work of potter John Beusmans and developed a highly recognisable style. Carn pieces often combine strong sculptural forms with textured surfaces, incised or impressed decoration and restrained earthy or coastal colour palettes. Today Carn Pottery has an enthusiastic following among collectors of Cornish and British studio pottery, particularly pieces displaying the more unusual forms and surface treatments produced by the pottery. This example carries the impressed/printed: CARN POTTERY NANCLEDRA PENZANCE CORNWALL mark to the base. The pierced shoulder and unusual blue cellular decoration make this a particularly attractive little example. MEASUREMENTS Approx. 11.5 cm high Approx. 6.5 cm wide CONDITION Excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks. Please study the photographs as they form part of the description. As with handmade vintage studio pottery, small variations and irregularities from the making and firing process are part of the character of the piece. A lovely piece for a collector of Carn Pottery, Cornish ceramics or mid-century British studio pottery — and small enough to sit beautifully on a bookshelf, mantel or little collection of treasured pots.
