:  at  £49.00  each

A beautiful early Noritake pedestal cake stand, richly decorated with one of the company's most distinctive desert scenes. Dating to approximately the 1920s–1930s, the porcelain plate features a hand-painted desert landscape with a camel and rider, Bedouin-style tent, palm trees and distant pyramids and mountains, all set against a wonderfully atmospheric golden sky. The central scene is surrounded by a deep cobalt blue border lavishly decorated with raised gilt flowers, leaves and scrolling detail. It is a wonderfully decorative example of the exotic Egyptian and Middle Eastern-inspired imagery that became particularly fashionable during the early decades of the 20th century. The underside carries the Noritake factory mark together with MADE IN JAPAN. Noritake grew from the Japanese porcelain business established by the Morimura family, producing finely decorated wares for the export market. During the early 20th century its decorators became particularly well known for elaborate hand-painted scenes, rich cobalt grounds and extensive gilding. Desert scenes featuring camels, palm trees and pyramids are now among the most recognisable of these early decorative designs. The porcelain plate sits upon a silver-coloured pedestal stand, which can be unscrewed and removed. This makes the piece practical for storage as well as giving it a particularly elegant raised profile when displayed. A fabulous piece for an afternoon tea table, cake display or simply as a decorative centrepiece. It would also look wonderful displayed amongst other early Noritake or Art Deco-era ceramics. MEASUREMENTS Approx. 22 cm diameter Approx. 13 cm high including stand CONDITION Excellent antique/vintage condition. There are no chips or cracks to the porcelain. The extensive gilded decoration has survived remarkably well, with very little wear considering the age of the piece. The metal pedestal shows some expected age-related surface wear/patina. Please study the photographs as they form part of the description. The pedestal can be removed from the porcelain plate. A particularly attractive survivor with strong colour, beautiful gilding and a wonderfully evocative hand-painted scene.
