I picked this little Carn Pottery vase because it packs an enormous amount of character into a relatively small piece. The rounded body, tall narrow neck and pierced detailing give it a wonderfully sculptural shape, while the soft blue and white finish makes the heavily textured surface really stand out. The body is decorated with Carn Pottery’s distinctive raised, organic pattern, picked out in soft blue-grey against a pale textured ground. Around the shoulder are a series of circular pierced openings, adding another interesting architectural element to the design. MAKER Carn Pottery, Cornwall, England. Carn Pottery was established in Cornwall by potter John Beusmans and became particularly known for its highly individual sculptural forms and textured surface decoration. Pieces were produced in a wide variety of shapes, often combining geometric or organic relief patterns with muted earthy glazes. This example is not signed with the Carn name but carries the impressed/code number N32 to the base. This is not unusual for Carn Pottery. Not every piece received the full pottery mark, and numbered examples are known, with the numbers relating to individual forms or designs. The combination of form, construction and characteristic surface decoration is consistent with Carn Pottery production. CONDITION Very good vintage condition. Please study the photographs as these form part of the description. SIZE Approximately 12 cm high / just under 5 inches. STYLE IT Small enough to sit easily on a shelf, mantel or amongst a collection of studio pottery, but unusual enough not to disappear into the background. It would work particularly well in a simple rustic, coastal or mid-century interior. A lovely little piece of Cornish studio pottery and a particularly interesting Carn design with its pierced shoulder and heavily textured body. Please note that this is a vintage item and minor signs of age and previous use are part of its character.
