  • Vassos Demetriou Signed Cypriot Studio Pottery Jug | Raku Crackle Glaze, Sculptural Ceramic Vase

  • £98.00

:  at  £98.00  each

A striking signed studio pottery jug/vase by acclaimed Cypriot ceramic artist Vassos Demetriou. This is a particularly sculptural example of Demetriou’s work, with an asymmetric cut-away rim, angular handle and bold incised linear decoration. The surface is beautifully complex, moving through turquoise blue-green, earthy copper and deep charcoal tones, with a fine crackled texture giving the piece wonderful depth. The combination of the unusual architectural form and richly varied surface makes this as much a piece of ceramic sculpture as a functional vessel. It looks superb displayed alone and would sit particularly well in a collection of British or European studio pottery, Mid-Century and Modernist ceramics. The piece is signed “Vassos” and “Cyprus” to the base. MAKER: Vassos Demetriou ORIGIN: Cyprus DATE: Late 20th century MATERIAL: Studio pottery / ceramic STYLE: Modernist / Mediterranean studio pottery / sculptural ceramics CONDITION: Vintage condition. Please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description. The crackled and varied surface is characteristic of the artist’s glaze and firing techniques rather than a uniform factory finish. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Vassos Demetriou is an internationally recognised Cypriot master ceramicist, born in Famagusta, Cyprus in 1954. He began working with ceramics as a teenager and later studied at the prestigious Instituto Statale d’Arte per la Ceramica in Faenza, Italy, from 1978 to 1981. He subsequently established his permanent ceramics workshop in Larnaca, Cyprus in 1982. Demetriou is particularly known for his experimental approach to firing and glaze chemistry, working with techniques including raku, reduction, gas and wood firing. His ceramics combine a strong understanding of Mediterranean pottery traditions with distinctly contemporary and often sculptural forms. He has received multiple awards at the Panhellenic Ceramic Exhibition and his work has received international recognition, including inclusion in the Homo Faber Guide celebrating exceptional European craftsmanship. A highly decorative and increasingly collectable piece of signed Cypriot studio pottery, with a very distinctive presence. Please see photographs for full details of form, glaze, signature and condition. Carefully packed for shipping.
