A wonderfully bold 1970s collector's plate designed by celebrated Danish artist Bjørn Wiinblad for Rosenthal Studio-Linie, Germany. This is Motif I – “Aladin und die Wunderlampe” (Aladdin and the Magic Lamp) – the opening design from Rosenthal's series of twelve decorative plates illustrating episodes from the story of Aladdin and the tales of One Thousand and One Nights. Wiinblad's unmistakable style is immediately recognisable: fantastical figures, theatrical costume, sweeping lines and extraordinarily rich colour. Here Aladdin encounters the spirit of the lamp, rendered in vivid orange, green, yellow, turquoise and red against a deep cobalt-blue ground. The elaborate gold decoration around the border and throughout the design gives the little plate considerably more presence than its size suggests. Bjørn Wiinblad (1918–2006) was a Danish artist, illustrator, ceramicist and designer whose highly decorative work stood apart from the restrained Scandinavian modernism of his contemporaries. His collaborations with the prestigious German porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal brought his distinctive, fairy-tale imagery to ceramics and porcelain. The reverse carries the gold Rosenthal markings: “Rosenthal Sammelprogramm – unlimitierte Edition” “Aladin und die Wunderlampe I” Rosenthal studio-linie Germany Bjørn Wiinblad It also retains its original fitting for wall display.
