VINTAGE SUSAN BENNETT STUDIO POTTERY VASE A beautifully understated piece of British studio pottery by Susan Bennett, with a tall cylindrical form and distinctive hand-worked botanical decoration. The vase has a wonderfully earthy palette, with an olive-brown brushed ground contrasting against the warm natural stoneware. The front is decorated with an elegant incised / resist-style design of tall grasses or reeds, giving the piece a distinctly organic, mid-century studio pottery feel. The horizontal movement of the glaze is particularly attractive and shows the handmade nature of the piece beautifully. A pale glazed rim and exposed stoneware foot frame the darker central decoration. A lovely decorative piece in its own right, and an appealing example of British studio ceramics for a collector. MAKER Susan Bennett – British studio potter. Susan Bennett is recorded by the British & Irish Studio Pottery Marks reference (BISPM), which dates her London pottery activity from 1970. The reference also records that potter David Small was throwing at the pottery between 1980 and 1983, with Susan Bennett decorating the pots during this period. Her work is associated with hand-thrown stoneware and individual surface decoration, placing it firmly within the British studio pottery tradition of the later 20th century.
