A wonderfully tactile piece of British studio pottery by potter David Firth, bearing his impressed DF seal to the body. This small handled vessel has a beautifully simple, almost sculptural form. The rounded wheel-thrown body is finished in a deep earthy brown-black glaze, with subtle rusty tones and throwing lines visible around the surface. A contrasting pale stoneware rim gives the piece definition, while the single flattened handle extends from one side. The restrained decoration and earthy glaze allow the clay and making process to remain very much part of the finished piece – exactly the qualities that make British studio pottery so appealing. DAVID FIRTH David Firth is associated with the British studio pottery tradition, producing functional and decorative stoneware characterised by strong thrown forms, natural glazes and an emphasis on the qualities of the clay itself. Rather than relying on elaborate surface decoration, pieces such as this use proportion, texture, glaze and the marks of the potter's hand to create their character. The vessel carries Firth's impressed DF potter's seal on the exterior, an attractive feature in its own right and useful in identifying the maker.
