A rather lovely mystery. This small antique vase immediately caught my eye for its unusual combination of soft powder blue, deep cobalt and delicate floral decoration. The rounded body has a gently lobed form, rising to a short shaped neck washed in a much deeper blue. The flower and foliage have been freely decorated in cobalt, with surviving traces of fine gilded detailing which can be seen particularly clearly when the vase catches the light. The base carries a small blue maker’s mark, but despite considerable research I have not been able to attribute it confidently to a particular pottery. Rather than give it a speculative maker, I am selling it simply for what it is – a very attractive piece of early decorative pottery with plenty of character. Stylistically I believe it dates from around the turn of the 20th century / early 1900s, approximately c.1900–1920. There is age-related crazing to the glaze, particularly visible underneath, together with minor marks and wear consistent with an antique piece. Much of the original gilded decoration has worn with age, although enough survives to show how pretty the original design would have been. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description. The unidentified blue mark on the base is photographed. If its new owner happens to solve the mystery of the pottery, I would love to know! A beautiful little piece for a collection of antique ceramics, blue and white pottery or simply displayed on a shelf amongst other old treasures.
