:  at  £37.00  each

A striking signed studio pottery vase decorated using the horsehair firing technique, producing wonderfully spontaneous black carbon lines across a warm cream and smoke-toned surface. The vase has an elegant rounded body, narrow waist and gently flared rim, with darker smoky firing around the lower section. The horsehair decoration gives the piece an almost calligraphic quality – every line created through the firing process and therefore completely individual. The base is clearly incised “KATIA” together with a distinctive little fish emblem or potter’s device. I have been unable to identify the ceramicist behind this particular signature and fish mark, so I am selling the piece as an unidentified signed studio pottery work rather than making an unsupported attribution. The clear signature and separate maker’s device may well be recognisable to a collector familiar with the potter. Horsehair pottery is created by applying strands of horsehair to a very hot ceramic surface. The hair burns on contact, leaving the characteristic carbon trails and smoky markings seen across this vase. A lovely decorative piece in its own right, with plenty of character for a studio pottery, contemporary craft or artisan ceramics collection. MEASUREMENTS Approx. 13 cm high × 8 cm wide. CONDITION Excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Signed KATIA to the base with an incised fish emblem. Please see all photographs as they form part of the description.
