A wonderfully characterful Victorian majolica jug, dating to approximately 1880, with beautifully detailed raised bird decoration, leafy branches and an unusual bamboo-effect handle. This is a substantial piece of 19th-century decorative pottery, standing 24cm tall, with a lovely combination of moss green, warm ochre, brown and soft pink glazes. The bird is particularly striking, with its finely modelled feathers and long sweeping tail. The bamboo-style handle and moulded botanical details give the jug an almost exotic appearance, reflecting the Victorian fascination with nature and decorative ceramics. Majolica pottery became enormously popular during the Victorian period, celebrated for its richly coloured glazes, imaginative designs and intricate relief decoration. This jug has a wonderful aged appearance, with the fine glaze crazing that gives antique majolica so much of its character.
