A little French countryside charm from the 1960s. A wonderfully decorative pair of vintage fish plates, believed to be French in origin and dating to around the 1960s. Each plate features a delightful freshwater fish illustration, with the first depicting two beautifully coloured golden-orange fish and the second showing a pair of silver-grey fish with rich orange fins. The fish are surrounded by delicate green aquatic foliage against softly painted blue-grey water, creating an almost watercolour-like appearance. What makes these plates particularly lovely is the contrast between their rustic countryside subjects and their rather grand finishing touches. Elaborate gold scrollwork frames each illustration, while gently scalloped edges and fine gilded rims give them an elegant, traditional appearance. They evoke the atmosphere of old French country houses, leisurely riverside lunches and rustic fishing lodges, where decorative tableware was as much about character as practicality. A Lovely Decorative Pair These plates would look beautiful displayed together on a kitchen dresser, hung on a wall or incorporated into a traditional country-house table setting. They would also make a thoughtful gift for a fishing enthusiast, a collector of vintage French ceramics or anyone who appreciates unusual countryside-inspired homeware. There's something wonderfully quirky about taking such an everyday countryside subject and surrounding it with all that elaborate gold decoration. They're charming, slightly eccentric and full of vintage character — exactly the sort of pieces I love finding. Other coordinating fish plates from the same collection are also available in my shop. Carefully packaged and dispatched from Cornwall. Some things deserve a second look.
