A wonderfully nostalgic pair of vintage fish plates, full of French countryside charm and old-fashioned elegance. Believed to originate from France during the 1960s, these two decorative dinner plates celebrate the beauty of freshwater fish, combining detailed natural history illustrations with rather splendid gold decoration. One plate features two striking pike, their distinctive elongated bodies beautifully illustrated in shades of green, olive and silver, with flashes of reddish orange. The second depicts a pair of richly coloured golden-orange fish, swimming through soft blue-grey water amongst delicate green aquatic plants. Both plates are surrounded by elaborate gold scrollwork, with gently scalloped edges and fine gilded rims that give them a wonderfully traditional finish. From the French Country Table There's something rather lovely about the idea of these plates gracing a dining table in a French country house sixty years ago. They bring to mind riverside villages, fishing expeditions, leisurely lunches and those wonderfully individual interiors where everyday objects were chosen to be both useful and beautiful. Today, they would make an unusual addition to a country kitchen, a vintage dresser or a collection of decorative wall plates. Their combination of colourful fish illustrations and ornate gilding also makes them particularly appealing to collectors of fishing memorabilia and traditional countryside ceramics. Why I Picked Them I couldn't resist the wonderfully eccentric combination of freshwater fish and extravagant gold decoration. They're the sort of plates that make you smile — rather grand for a couple of fish, but all the more charming for it! I particularly love how the different illustrations complement one another, making them lovely to display as a pair. Whether used for a special country-house table setting or simply enjoyed as decorative pieces, they have that unmistakable vintage character I always look for. Carefully packaged and dispatched from Cornwall. Some things deserve a second look.
